BRSWCD Seeking Volunteer Ag & Forestry BMPs

The Blue Ridge Soil & Water Conservation District is currently looking for farmers in Franklin, Henry, Roanoke Counties and the City of Roanoke to participate in the Virginia Agricultural Voluntary Best Management Practice (BMP) Assessment Program. The assessment is voluntary and will allow District staff to document the number and type of both cost-shared and non-cost-shared voluntary BMP on farm(s).

For complete info, click here.

Residential Septic Cost Share

For qualifying participants, the TMDL Residential Implementation Program provides financial assistance to property owners as an incentive to implement Best Management Practices (BMP’s).

This will help improve water quality and reduce levels of fecal coliform bacteria so that the Pigg River watershed will meet state TMDL standards.

Rain Barrel
Workshops

A rain barrel that is connected to your downspout is a great way to cut down your water bill. What you collect has few

contaminants (since it comes right off of your roof) which makes it suitable for many applications around the house.

If you are interested in making a rain barrel in 2011 for your own use, download the info to register and to see how you can schedule a workshop.

The Ginko Shawlette & the Rain Barrel.

Though it sounds like a recent Hollywood blockbuster, it is in fact a brief description of some of the great take-home items from the 73rd VASWCD Annual Meeting.

The lucky person to take these items home was Ms. Giannina Lenco (pictured below).

Ms. Lenco didn’t just walk out with the hand-crafted shawlette, she also went home with a rain barrel for those upcoming Spring storms.

Dorothea Pierce (pictured at left) proudly holds the Ginko Shawlette she crafted.

This item was donated by The Crooked Stitch Quilts and Knits, located in beautiful Rocky Mount.

Camp 2012

(From the VASWCD.org site)
For 35 years, the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts has sponsored a week long summer conservation camp for Virginia high school students (currently enrolled in grades 9-12) on the campus of Virginia Tech. The program brings together about 70 interested students for a week of learning about Virginia’s natural resources from conservation professionals and faculty from Virginia Tech. Most of the instruction is hands-on and outdoors.

It also provides financial support to students majoring in or showing a strong desire to major in a course curriculum related to natural resource conservation and/or environmental studies.

So if you are interested or know someone who might be, download the application here.
